Test the seals
Place a piece of paper or a bill on the edge of your refrigerator, then close the door. Now, try to pull it out. Do it on the several other areas. Can you easily pull the paper slip? Fix the weakened seals of your ref.
Give space to breath
Your refrigerator also needs space to breath. Leave at leave four inches of space between the wall and your unit. Make sure that it is also away from other appliances that can cause heat as this may cause it to be overworked.
Cool or uncool?
Some new models of refrigerators have water and ice dispensers. It is more expensive than the common design and it may save you time from opening your ref and getting the pitcher of water. However, these units also tend to use more electricity than the usual ones. It is really practical?
Defrosting
There are new units that can self defrost. This feature can save you time if you are really busy, but if you could spare some time to defrost your ref every time it builds up around a quarter inch of ice, then you can choose the manual defrost ref to save electricity.
Size
Are you using the right ref size for your needs? Try to evaluate, is your ref too small that it is overworked or is it too big that it is just wasting the energy?
Water bottles
It is a common joke for some households that all their ref contains are watter bottles and pitchers, well it does help save energy. Fill in the empty space of your ref with water bottles to save the cool temp but make sure not to overcrowd it as it may be overworked.
Thaw inside
If you have that frozen meat or other food in the freezer that needs thawing, put it in the fridge instead. It will help the cooling on the fridge and you don’t have to use a microwave or make a pool of mess in the kitchen.
Keep it quick
As often as we tell the children, try not to open the door frequently. Organize the things inside your ref so you don’t have to take a lot of time. Try open the ref and get things as quickly as possible because the longer that it is open, the more work it has to do.
Not too hot
If it is possible, avoid putting hot food inside the ref. Make sure that it is cool enough to be put inside the ref so it won’t be overworked.
Old and new
You might be attached to your ref as it may be a wedding gift or the first appliance that you bought, but also you should know that older refs use more electricity. If it is older than 10 years and if you have the budget, check out the new ref units that have energy saving features.
As the electricity rates goes higher, it won’t hurt to try some simple things to save up.
